1. A Complaint against Soaring Housing Prices Over the past years, China’s housing market has witnessed an extremely high increase in prices. Although the central government has composed a series of regulations to control it, all of them have proved to be ineffective at all. China is entering the state of real estate bubble, where wealthy people have bought more than one house as a speculation, while residents who earn an average salary cannot afford one. Among the people who complain about the soaring housing prices are young university graduates who have just worked for a few years and haven’t saved enough for down payment. As university students, we are likely to be among them in a few years. Therefore, I’d like to analyze this phenomenon. The majority of the young university graduates, who have just started to live on their own in a city, do not earn much and their salary can only cover their basic needs. They consume a lot and do not amass enough savings for their houses. They have complained due to prohibitively high prices and they will never be able to afford a house through their own efforts. However, after years of work, they would have to get married. Nowadays in China, as most young university graduates are the only child of a family, those parents who have already owned their houses would like to help their son or daughter purchase a property in the city where they work. Thus, the burden of buying a house or an apartment passes to the older generation. The soaring housing prices have definitely become a tough problem not only in the economy but also in the society. Chinese government should take effective measures to solve this challenging problem. Lowering housing prices by new regulations is a solution that we could figure out. But it would lead to many unexpected consequences, such as higher unemployment rate and lower wealth effect.
