Mangrove in Haikou Located in the Dongzhai Harbor Mangrove Natural Reserve in the Southeast of Haikou City, it covers an area of 4,000 acres. Dongzhai Harbor Mangrove Natural Reserve was designated as National Nature Reserve in February, 1980. In 1992, it was listed as one of the ten key tourism development zones of Hainan province, and is a well-known scenic spot. Mangrove here grows in the sea water all the year round with large crowns and bizarre trunks. Winding in and out of the tree trunks by boat is like entering a wonderland. Nowadays Dongzhaig Harbor Mangrove Natural Reserve has become a famous scenic spot and a scientific research base for scholars both home and abroad. The lately discovered Sonneratia caseolaris is China’s most precious rare species of plants. Mangrove, sunlight, sea water, beaches, seafood and the historical sites of Ming Dynasty---the undersea village constitute the spectacular landscape. Mangrove is peculiar to the tropical and sub-tropical coastal area and is a particular plant resource of multifunction and large profit. It is an unusual species. Therefore, an International Mangrove Association has been founded, which has academic exchanges regularly and aims at promoting the preservation and development of the mangrove. Dongzhai Harbor Mangrove Natural Reserve contains 15 families and 29 species and has been named “oasis on the sea” or “forest park on the sea” not only for the various shapes of the tree crown, but also for the trees growing in the coastal mudflat. There have been an increasing number of tourists who come to visit and do research since Dongzhai Harbor Mangrove Natural Reserve was turned into a tourist zone.
