The History of Traditional Chinese Music Traditional Chinese Music one of the oldest and most highly developed of all known musical systems can be traced back 7,000 - 8,000 years a means of calming the passions and of dispelling unrest and lust Periods of Music Development Xia, Shang and Zhou Dynasties Qin and Han Dynasties Tang Dynasty Song and Yuan Dynasties Ming and Qing Dynasties In Xia, Shang and Zhou Dynasties only royal families and dignitary officials enjoyed music Music is made on chimes and bells In Qin and Han Dynasties Qin dynasty : severe setback of Chinese music Han dynasty : a renaissance ; the imperial court had set up a Music bureau in charge of gathering and editing ancient tunes and folk songs. new instruments introduced: huqin In Tang Dynasty(1) Chinese secular music ( suyue俗乐 ) reached its peak. Yanyue or banquet music became the major court musical genre for the first time Dancing and singing entered the mainstream In Tang Dynasty (2) Jiaofang(教坊) : The huge music bureau of the court Liyuan (Pear Garden): The first music academy Poems set into songs In Song and Yuan Dynasties Song Dynasty Zaju and Nanxi; Ci Yuan Dynasty Qu musical instruments : pipa, flute, and zither Ming and Qing Dynasties The art of traditional opera developed rapidly.
