jonedonne的课件ppt
John Donne 1572-1631 John Donne Father of Metaphysical poetry The life of Donne can be divided into two stages. In the first stage he was the Donne the courtier(a noble who spent time at the court of a king or queen ), the lover and the soldier. In the second stage he was Dr. John Donne, Dean of St. Paul’s Cathedral. Background Donne was born in a Roman catholic family, at a time when anti-catholic feeling in England was near its height. He received his education at Oxford and Cambridge and later studied law at Lincoln’s Inn. But he never took any academic degrees and never practiced law. In the 1590’s , he quietly abandoned Catholism. As a young man he was hungry for adventures. He joined the expedition of Essex for Cadiz in 1596, and for the Azores(亚速尔群岛) in 1597. he was secretary to Sir T.Egerton, keeper of the Great Seal. In 1601 he eloped with Ann More, niece of Egerton’s wife, and for this he was cast into prison by the girl’s father. After his release he lived in poverty for 15years, during which time he wrote some of his most beautiful lines, many of which believed to have been written to his wife. In 1615 he gave up his Catholic faith and took orders in the Anglican Church and for 10 years, from 1621 to his death, he was Dean of St. Paul’s Cathedral. During this last period of his life he wrote only religious sermons and poems and was the most famous preacher of his time. Songs and Sonnets《歌与十四行诗》, a collection of his 55 love lyrics, was published after his death in 1633. Donne’s love lyrics may be classified into 2 groups. The poems of one group takes a negative attitude towards love, and those of the other group take a positive attitude towards love. Donne’s poetry represents a sharp break with that written by his predecessor and most of his contemporaries. He was the firs to rebell against the dominance of the conventional romantic, the fashion for the pastoral and the allegory. Wearied of the sweet melodies of the Petrarchan and pastoral Elizabeth
