Emphasize: This class will focus on how to connect three sites: a central site, a branch office, and a small site. Familiarize students with the multiple terms that are used to reference the various sites. Analogy: At Cisco Systems, the headquarters site in San Jose is a central site example. Likewise, branch offices that house many SEs are located in most major cities. Employees who work from home are considered telecommuters. When employees travel on business, they must dial in from remote locations to check their e-mail. In this course, they are referred to as remote telecommuters. Transition: The following three figures describe typical considerations at each company site. Purpose: This figure shows the central site router setup. Emphasize: The router in the figure is a Cisco 3640 router with the appropriate WAN interface cards. The modules in the figure are as follows: 1-Ethernet 2-WAN card slot network module—Used for Ethernet connections. The module in the figure can also support two WAN interface cards. 1-port CT1/PRI-CSU network module—Used for Primary Rate Interface PRI connections. Digital modem network module—Internal modem used for dial-in connections. One digital modem network module can support up to 30 MICA modems. 4-port serial WAN network module—Used for Frame Relay, X.25, and to connect to an external modem. Note: The 4-port serial WAN network module was selected over serial WAN interface cards because the WAN interface cards do not support asynchronous connections in the 3640 router.
