EI205 Lecture 10 Dianguang Ma Fall 2008 CHAPTER 10 SHIFT REGISTERS 10-1 BASIC SHIFT REGISTER FUNCTIONS A register is a digital circuit with two basic functions: data storage and data movement. The storage capacity of a register is the total number of bits (1s or 0s) of digital data it can retain. A shift (register) consists of flip-flops. Each flip-flop can store one bit, so the number of flip-flops in a register determines its storage capacity. Basic data movement in shift registers includes Serial in/shift right/serial out Serial in/shift left/serial out Parallel in/serial out Serial in/parallel out Parallel in/parallel out Rotate right Rotate left The Flip-Flop as a Storage Element The Flip-Flop as a Storage Element Basic Data Movement in Shift Registers Basic Data Movement in Shift Registers Basic Data Movement in Shift Registers Basic Data Movement in Shift Registers 10-2 SERIAL IN/SERIAL OUT SHIFT REGISTERS The serial in/serial out shift register accepts data serially – that is, one bit at a time on a single line. It produces the stored information on its output also in serial form. Four Bits Being Entered Serially into the Register The register is initially clear. Four Bits Being Serially Shifted out of the Register Four bits (1010) being serially shifted out of the register and replaced by all zeros. Example 10-1 The register contains 11010 after five clock pulses. Logic Symbol for a Serial in/Serial out Shift Register The “SRG 8” designation means a shift register (SRG) with an 8-bit capacity. 10-3 SERIAL IN/PARALLEL OUT SHIFT REGISTERS The serial in/serial out shift register accepts data serially. It produces the stored information on its output in parallel form -that is, the data bits are taken out of the register simultaneously . Example 10-2 The register contains 0110 after five clock pulses.
