AbstractWiththeincreasingprocessabilityofmoderncomputers,boththecharacterandspeechrecognitiontechnologiesaredevelopingfast,leadingtothebornofvarious recognitionproducts.However,thesehigh-techproductsdonotbenefitonepartofthehumanbeings--thedisabledcannotenjoythefruitoftechnologydevelopment.Soitisaimportantissuehowthemoderntechnologycanservethedisablebetter.Researchonspeechrecognitionandbraillecharacterrecognition technologyandfurthermakingthemintousearereallymeaningfulandimportant.Asforthespecialneedoftheblindtoinputinformationtocertaindevices,thispaperresearchessomenewmethodsregardingtothespeechrecognitionandbraillecharacterrecognition.Adesignofmobilephonefortheblindbasedonthesetechnologyisproposed.Systemarchitectureandworkingprincipleareintroduced,as wellasthemainpartsandkeyinterfaces.Thispaperalsostudiesthespeechrecognitionalgorithmmainlybasedonthecontinuoushiddenmarkovmodelsanditsapplicationinspeakerindependentisolatedwordrecognitionsystems.Firstthespeechrecognitionrelatedtheoriesandmethodsareintroducedfromthesignalpreprocessing,windowingandframing,endpointdetecting,featureextraction,tothetrainingandrecognitionsteps.Then severalspeechmodelsarecomparedtogetabetteronefortherealembeddedsystems.Inthedesign,ahammingwindowisadoptedforwindowingthesignals,andadouble-thresholdmethodofbothshort-timeenergyandzero-passingrateisusedfor endpointdetecting. Themel frequencycepstrumcoefficientischosenforfeatureextraction,andtheViterbiandBaum-Welchalgorithmsarebothusedrespectivelyfor recognition andtrainingprocesses.Akindofleft-to-rightcontinuousHMMis adoptedasthespeechmodelandcriticalproblemsincludinginitialparameters,multidataseriestraininganddataunderflowarestudiedcarefully.Akindofcomplanationmethodforthebraillecharacterisproposed.Firstaccordingtotheattributeofthebraillecharacterasetofabstractionsisdesignedso thatcharacterscanbeinputthroughtouchscreen.Theseabstractionsarelatersegmentedarefeaturesofdifferentcharactersareobtained.RecognitionmethodistheEuclideandistance.Thus,asyst
