ResearchonSprayCharacteristicsofGasoline-AlcoholBlendsandInjectorNozzleOptimizationABSTRACTWitheconomicdevelopmentandtechnologyadvancement,energyshortageandenvironmentalpollutionhavebecomeincreasinglysignificantglobalproblems.Asthe mainpowersourceforautomobiles,internalcombustionenginesbringaboutmassiveconsumptionofpetroleumaswellasemissionpollution.Thereforealternative fuelsandemissionreductiondrawagreatattentionofpublic.Asalargeagriculturalcountrywithplentyofcoalminesandothermineralresources,Chinacanbebenefitedgreatlyfromapplicationofalternativefuelssuchasalcoholetherfuels.Asthemostpopularalternativefuelsavailabletoday,gasoline-methanolandgasoline-ethanolblendshaveshown greatpotentialsofhigheroctane number,broaderflammabilitylimits,higherflamepropagationspeedandhigherlatentheat,whichwillimproveengineefficiencyandemission.Researchesonthealcoholfuelshavebeenfocusedoncold-startanderosionproblem,butinfluencesoffuelphysicalpropertiesonsprayandcombustionhavenotbeeninvestigatedenough.Thispaper mainlyinvestigateddensity,viscosityandsurfacetensionofgasoline-methanolandgasoline-ethanolblends,andrelationshipsamongambientconditions,fuelphysicalpropertiesandspraycharacteristicsfromamulti-holelowpressuredirect-injectioninjector,usingwhitelightilluminationtechnology.AVLFIREcodewasappliedtosimulate injectorinnerflowandspraycharacteristics,andstructureoflowpressureDIinjectorwasoptimizedtoachievebetteratomizedspray.Theresultsshowthatdensity,viscosityand surfacetensionofgasoline-alcoholblendsdecreasewhentemperatureincrease,andthemixturedensityandviscosityincreaseasthealcohol-to-gasolineratioincreaseswhilethesurfacetensionisrelativelyinsensitivetothealcohol-to-gasolineratio.Thesprayimagesshowthatincreasingofdensityand viscosityresultsinreducedpenetrationofnon-flashboilingspray,whilehighersaturation vaporpressurecauseslongerpenetrationofflashboilingspray.Howeversprayanglevarieswithsurfacetensioninversely.Intermsofsimulationresults,forgasoline-methanoland gasoline-ethanolsprays,SMDonth
