* * Author Background Summary Characters AUthor Margaret Mitchell: 玛格莉特?米歇尔 She was born 1900 November 8th.Her hometown was Atlanta where the story took place,and the city was famous for the Civil War.After writing Gone With The Wind, Mitchell became so famous.Also because of this novel she won the coveted Pulitzer Prize in 1937 . the American Civil War (1861–1865) also known as the War Between the States , was a civil war in the United States of America . Eleven Southern slave states declared their secession from the United States and formed the Confederate States of America, also known as the Confederacy. Led by Jefferson Davis, the Confederacy fought against the United States (the Union), which was supported by all the free states (where slavery had been abolished) and by five slave states that became known as the border states. Lincoln The election of Lincoln in November 1860 was the final trigger for secession.Efforts at compromise, including the Corwin Amendment and the Crittenden Compromise, failed. Southern leaders feared that Lincoln would stop the expansion of slavery and put it on a course toward extinction. The slave states, which had already become a minority in the House of Representatives, were now facing a future as a perpetual minority in the Senate and Electoral College against an increasingly powerful North. Before Lincoln took office in March 1861, seven slave states had declared their secession and joined together to form the Confederacy. Slavery for the Confederacy`s 3.5 million blacks effectively ended when Union armies arrived; they were nearly all freed by the Emancipation Proclamation. Slaves in the border states and those located in some former Confederate territory occupied prior to the Emancipation Proclamation were freed by state action or by the Thirteenth Amendment. The full restoration of the Union was the work of a highly contentious postwar era known as Reconstruction. The war produced about 1,030,000 casualties (3% of t
