The Dragon Boat festival is a common name for the Tuen Ng Festival-which is a traditional Chinese celebration held on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese calendar. It is a public holiday in Hong Kong and commemorates (纪念) the death of a popular Chinese national hero, Qu Yuan, who drowned himself over 2,000 years ago to protest against a corrupt government. Legend says that people attempted to rescue him by beating drums to scare fish away and threw dumplings into the sea to keep the fish from eating his body.
