AbstractInthispaper,themixedpowderofCandSiwaspreparedbyhighenergyball milling.Thenthemixedpowderwasmadeintoslurryofethanolandcoatedontothe M40Jshortcarbonfiber.?-SiCnanowiresweresynthesizedonthesurfaceofcarbon fiberat1200?Cinargon.Csf-SiCNW/Alcompositewasfabricatedbysqueezecasting techniqueusingtheshortcarbonfiberwith?-SiC nanowires and 6061 aluminum alloy.Andthevolumefractionofcarbonfiberwas6%and10%andthecorresponding volume fraction ofSiC were0.6%and 1.2%.Thephase,morphology,compositionandcrystalstructurewerecharacteredby XRD,SEMandTEM.Theeffect ofdiffierentmillingprocess ontheSiC nanowire growthwasanalysed.Thethermodynamicofthegrowthprocessandmechanismwere also discussed.Themechanical propertiesofCsf-SiCNW/Al wasstudied by three-point-bindingandtensiletest.Themetallographicandfracturemorphologywere observed.Thephaseandmicrostructureinthecompositeswereanalysed.Theeffectof SiC nanowireon themechanicalproperties ofCsf/Al composites was investigated.Theslurryofmixedpowdermilledfor24hwascoatedonthecarbonfiberandheatedat1200?Cfor1h.Alargeamountofnanowireswereobservedonthesurfaceof carbonfiber.XRDshowsthat the crystal structureofnanowires is?-SiC.Thediameterof nanowiresis20?100nmandthelengthisseveraltensmicrometertoseveralhundred micrometer.Therearetwodifferentkindsofmorphology,whicharestraightand curved.Thesynthesizednaonowireshasthe“core-shell”structure,whichhasauniform SiOxamorphouslayerwiththeSiCcore.Inthecoretherearemanystackingfaultsand twins,leadeingtotheserratedsurface.ThegrowthdirectionofSiCnanowiresis111. Thereisalittleamountofnanowiresarebamboo-likeorhasachainmorphologywith beads.Somesphericalparticleswerefoundattheendofnanowires,whosediameterarea littlelargerthanthenanowires.TheyplaytheroleofmelalcatalystintraditionalVLS mechanismbyabsorbingSiOandCO.SiCprecipitateswhentheconcentrationbecomes saturated.MechanicalpropertiesexperimentshowsthattheintroductionofSiCimprovesthe strengthofthecomposites.ForthecompositeswiththesamevolumefractionofcarbonII -fiber,SiCna
