Samuelson Contents of Study Background Information Text Analysis Language Highlights ⅡOrganizations and events The Asian Financial Crisis The Asian financial crisis was initiated by two rounds of currency depreciation that had been occurring since early summer 1997. Governments countered the weakness in their currencies by selling foreign exchange reserves and raising interest rates, which, in turn, slowed economic growth and made interest-bearing securities more attractive than equities. The currency crises also revealed severe problems in the banking and financial sectors of the troubled Asian economies. Asian financial crisis shows globalization can promote risks as well as opportunities. ⅡOrganizations and events The European Union It was founded in November, 1993 in order to enhance political, economic, and social cooperation among members. It was formerly known as the European Community or the European Economic Community. It is headquartered in Brussels, Belgium. The EU has grown in size with successive waves of accessions. Following the addition of Romania and Bulgaria in 2007, the EUs membership now stands at twenty-seven. ⅡOrganizations and events Some see further European integration as the only way to manage and forestall the destabilizing effects of globalization and outsourcing. Others, in contrast, argue that the European Union facilitates and epitomizes these effects, especially as a result of continuing enlargement towards countries that, while geographically to the East, share many of the characteristics of the South.
