AbstractAsoneofthemostcommonlandtransportation,railwayplaysamajorroleinthemoderntransportsystemwiththecharacteristicoflargefreightvolume,lowoperationcost,fastspeedandlessenergyconsumption.AlongwiththerapiddevelopmentofeconomyinChina,thetrainspeededup6times.Theincreaseoftrainspeedmakesitstricterfortherailwaysystemsafeoperation.EspeciallymanyseriousrailwayaccidentshappenedinChinainrecentyears,whichnotonlycausedheavypersonnelandpropertylosses,butalsoseriouslyaffectedthereputationofChineserailway.Thecomprehensiveanalysisoftheaccidentsandtargetedprotectionandimprovementmeasuresareimportanttoimprovethesafetyoftherailwaysystemandpreventsimilaraccidentshappeninginthefuture.Theaccidentcauseanalysiswhichcontributestoillustratetherelationshipofthecauseandtheeffect,andexplainwhytheaccidenthappened,isanimportantbasistopreventthesimilaraccidents.Systemtheorytreatstheobjectofresearchasawhole,analyzesthestructureandfunctionoftheobject,andstudiestherelationshipamongobject,elementsandenvironmentandthechangerules.Asaninterdisciplinaryandmulti-fieldscience,systemtheoryiswidelyusedinindustrialengineering,scientificresearch,education,economy,health,militaryandadministrativeaspects.Utilizingthesystemtheoryandmethodsinrailwayaccidentsanalysiscouldgiveadescriptionofmovementandinterconnectionamonginnerelementsofrailwaysystem,whichprovidesasystemviewandseizesthecomplexityanddynamicsofthewholesystemtocomprehensivelyanalyzeandunderstandaccidents.Inthispaper,systemtheorymethodisappliedtoanalyzetheChinarailwayaccidents,andseekouttherootcauseoftheaccidents.TheSTEP-STAMPmethodcanhelprealizethecontrolmechanismandthecomplexinteractionswithinthesystem,andfindtherealcauseofaccidents.Systemtheory-basedcommoncausationanalysisofmultipleaccidentsapproachisabletohelpfindthecommonvulnerablespot,andtakesomeimprovementmeasurestoavoidmultipleaccidentsatthesametime.Thepaperisorganizedasfollows:Section1introducestheresearchbackgroundandsignificance,andreviewtheformerresearch.InSection2,theSTEP-STAMPmethodandsyste
