13.1. Defining linguistic research
1. Two types of research: A. conceptual research (or theorizing) 理论研究
B. empirical research 实证研究,实验法研究
Empirical research: Qualitative research 定性研究
Quantitative research 定量研究 (P. 260 The table)
2. Variables in empirical research
An empirical research probes into the relationship between different variables.
To do that, we raise research questions。 What are good research questions? [P.260]
Types of variables: Independent variables (IV) 独立变量,自变量
Dependent variables (DV) 因变量
Moderator variables (MV) 调节变量
Intervening variables 介入变量
Control variables 控制变量
3. sampling 抽样法
The sampling of subjects(受试者) must be randomly executed so as to be representative of the population (总体,群体)of a certain group of people and the number of samples must be big enough.
4. Hypothesis
A. H0 = null hypothesis (零假设): There is no relationship between the English proficiency of Chinese learners of English and their use of conversational repairs.
B. H1 = positive, directional hypothesis(正向的定向假设): There is relation between the English proficiency of Chinese learners of English and their use of conversational repairs. (i.e. the more proficient, the more likely to repair)
C. H2 = negative, directional hypothesis(反向的定向假设): There is some relationship between the English proficiency of Chinese learners of English and their use of conversational repairs. (i.
