* * Key Points in Chapter 17 Arthur Hugh Clough Gerard Manley Hopkins Edward Fitzgerald The Aesthetic Movement Arthur Hugh Clough (1819-1861) Introduction The shepherd poet in Mathew Arnold’s elegy, Thyrsis, Clough was one of Arnold’s closest friends in temperament and sensitivity. He wrote the best kind of hexameters in English poetry. All his life he was torn between faith and doubt. The people are hopeless and belief-less. There is no heaven or hell. So “Eat, drink, and die.” Major works: Dipsychus, “Say Not Struggle Nought Availeth” Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844-1889) Introduction I He proved himself to be one of the finest Victorian poets both in virtuosity and innovative enthusiasm. Today interest in his poetry and thought is visibly on the increase. Hopkins was odd and obscure. His epic-length The Wreck of the Deutschland is difficult but ranks along with Idylls of the King and The Ring and the Book. He wrote in his kind of rhythm which he called the “sprung rhythm.” Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844-1889) Introduction II Hopkins found this rhythm fascinating because the poet does not have to write in feet but rather emphasizes the number of accents (stresses) in a line. He is almost preoccupied with technical devices such as the manipulation of sounds, internal rime, alliteration, and assonance. Major short poems: “The Windhover,” “Pied Beauty,” “God’s Grandeur.” and “Thou Art Indeed Just, Lord, If I Contend.” The Aesthetic Movement Introduction I In the latter part of the Victorian period Britain enjoyed an unprecedented material expansion. The nation became increasingly more affluent. Getting and spending became the predominant pre-occupation of people’s endeavors, and insatiable acquisition the driving force of their lives. National ideals dimmed, the middle class grew, and along with it the influence of its values, its standards of materialism and cultural philistinism.
