* * Key Points in Chapter 21 D. H. Lawrence William Butler Yeats Imagism T. S. Eliot D. H. Lawrence (1885-1930) Introduction I He came from a working class family. His father was a coal miner, inarticulate but warm and intimate, while his mother was a school teacher, different in temper and behavior. His close attachment to his mother led him to the complexities of human love, and his paternal background set the realistic tone in his representation of life. In addition to the novels for which he is mainly renowned, he also excelled in the short story and poetry. D. H. Lawrence  Introduction II Lawrence was one of the great modern masters to come out of the period. He was heavily influenced by Freudianism. He placed emphasis on the depiction of the inner world and the irrational and called for the emancipation of the id. To him, the great and the beautiful come from within the inner soul, not from the progress of society and science. Lawrence calls for the restoration of man’s true selfhood to its pristine purity. He feels the most sacred thing is love, and the sacred can be realized only in the love between a man and a woman. D. H. Yeats had a huge sense of mission. All his works are affirmative in attitude and ebullient with a sense of pride which endows tragedy with meaning and chaos with order. Yeats is a recognized world poet and one of the two or three greatest poets of the 20th century. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1923. Yeats sees the world governed by a Great Wheel which runs around once every “twenty centuries,” when one age ends and a new one begins.
