AbstractThispapermakesacomparativestudyofChineseandEnglishPre-temporalAdverbialConjunctions(Pre-temporalACs)undertheguidanceofHalliday’sFunctionalLinguisticTheory.ThePre-temporalACsmainlyincludeYuanben(原本),Yuanlai(原来),Benlai(本来)inChineseandoriginally,formerly,previouslyinEnglish.Althoughsomescholarshaverealizedthesignificanceofthistypeofwordandanalyzedfromdifferentperspectives,still,therearen’tsomanyresearchesonthecomparativestudyfromtheperspectiveofFunctionalGrammar.Thethesisfirstintroducesthepurposesandmethodsoftheresearch.Andthen,itdealswiththetheoreticalfoundationsofthestudyandrelevantresearchesonACsathomeandabroad.Afterthat,thesyntacticfunctions,semanticfunctions,interpersonalandtextualfunctionsofPre-temporalACsaresystematicallyanalyzed.Noticeably,thethesismakesaspecificdefinitiononPre-temporalACsunderYuanSurong’s(2008)classificationofACs.Eventually,themajorfindingsandpracticalimplicationsaredescribed.Meanwhile,thelimitationsofpresentstudyarepointedoutandsomesuggestionsforfurtherstudyaremadebytheauthor.Thedatainthisstudyareselectedrespectivelyfromtwocorpora,theCorpusofChineseLinguistic(CCL)andtheCorpusofContemporaryAmericanEnglish(COCA).Baseontheselecteddata,thequantitativestudyofsyntacticpositionsandthequalitativeanalysesofthesemanticfunctions,interpersonalandtextualfunctionsareconductedinthethesis.Theinterpretationofeachanalysisisprovidedbyrealtextcorpus.ThestudyfindsthatChineseandEnglishPre-temporalACshavedifferentsyntacticandsemanticfunctions,andthesimilaritiesanddifferencesontextualandinterpersonalfunctionsarealsofoundthroughinvestigation.Themajorfindingsareasfollows:1.OnSyntacticfunctions,ChinesePre-temporalACsarefixedintheirpositions,eitherininitialpositionsormedialpositions.Inspokendiscourse,thesewordshavethetopfrequencyofappearingininitialpositions.AndtheEnglishonesaremoreflexibleintheirpositions.Appearinginfinalpositions,thistypeofwordfunctionsasanemphasis.2.Onsemanticfunctions,theybothcarryanadversativemeaninginsentences,whichcaneitherindicatenegatio
