计算机中介交流对二语词汇习得影响之探究-research on the influence of computer-mediated communication on second language vocabulary acquisition

AbstractWith the development of the society, the popularization of computer technology builds up a bridge for people to interact with each other and provides language learners more chances to learn language. In the field of Second Language Acquisition, Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC) gradually attracts more and more attention. Many researches show the positive effects of CMC on language learning from different perspectives. However, the related researches are not so favored in China.Applying Interaction Hypothesis, Attention Hypothesis and Comprehensible Input Hypothesis as the framework, this thesis aims to explore the effects of CMC on vocabulary acquisition in comparison with those of face-to-face communication. The research questions to be addressed in this study are:Can written CMC facilitate immediate vocabulary acquisition? If so, to what extent does written CMC facilitate immediate lexical form/ meaning acquisition? Is it as effective as face-to-face oral communication? Can written CMC facilitate vocabulary retention? If so, to what extent does written CMC facilitate lexical form/meaning retention? Is it as effective as face-to-face oral communication?60 non-English-major freshmen from China West Normal University participated in this experiment and were divided into two groups randomly. The participants in one group were required to interact in pairs with 30 English-major juniors and to complete an interactive task through written CMC. The participants in another group were required to interact in pairs with these 30 English-major juniors and to complete the same interactive task through face-to-face oral communication. When the task was ongoing or after it was finished, immediate form/meaning acquisition tests and delayed form/meaning retention tests were conducted. The data accepted were analyzed and compared by SPSS 16.0.The findings of the present study show that written CMC facilitates immediate vocabulary acquisition more effectively than face-to
