Imagine that in your region no one spoke Chinese anymore but spoke another language and discuss what effects this would have on: Example answer knowledge specific to the Chinese culture, for example, acupuncture, herbal medicine Chinese traditions and culture your self-esteem and feelings about your culture 2 Work in pairs. You will give a talk about the importance of preserving disappearing languages. Number the stages of the talk in the order you think best. Example answer 4-7-2-5-3-6-1 Stage 1 4 Explain why a language disappears. Stage 2 7 Say why it is important to study languages. Stage 3 2 Explain ways in which, if a language dies out, the knowledge of the language can be preserved. Stage 4 5 Give statistics about disappearing languages. Stage 5 3 State that languages are disappearing. Stage 6 6 Explain what can be done to revitalize a language. Stage 7 1 Give examples of disappearing languages. Example Stages of the Talk 3 Work in pairs. Match the statements with the stages of the talk in Activity 2. Answers d-g-c-a-f-b-e (d) Many native Indian languages of America and most Arctic indigenous languages. (g) We can record people speaking a language. (c) More than one-third of today’s languages are expected to disappear in the next hundred years. (a) Smaller cultures get absorbed into larger cultures. Explain why a language disappears.
