Unit 13 Integrated Skills Questions: 1. Do we often use only one single language skill or more than one in our daily life? Please give me some examples to illustrate this. 2. How about the situations for our English teaching? Do we use only one skill all the time? e.g. A reading class might include: Pre-reading discussion Listening Reading Writing Production and reception are quite simply two sides of the same coin. Interaction means sending and receiving messages. I. Why integration? Why Integration? The interrelationship of written and spoken language is an intrinsically motivating reflection of language and culture and society. Written and spoken language often (but not always) bear a relationship to each other. Theme / Topic-based teaching: How to integrate the four skills? e.g. English for academic purposes (EAP) In the classroom, students read articles or chapters, view video programs, discuss issues,propose solutions, and carry out writing assignments on a given theme (topic). How to integrate the four skills? Experiential Learning: Teachers do not simply tell students about how language works; instead, they give students opportunities to use language. (1) One learns best by ‘doing’, by active experimentation. (2) Inductive learning by discovery activates strategies that enable students to’take charge’ of their own learning progress. American educator, John Dewey: How to integrate the four skills? Task-based Teaching: (1) An emphasis on learning to communicate through interaction in the target language. (2) The introduction of authentic texts into the learning situation. (3) Opportunities for learners to focus not only on language, but also on the learning process itself. Task-based Teaching: (4) The learner’s own personal experiences as important contributing elements to classroom learning. (5) To link classroom language learning with language activation outside the classroom. (Brown 1994b: 220-230)
