ResearchonStructure-PreservingLayoutMethodsofHierarchicalandNetworkDataABSTRACTWiththecomingofinformationage,peoplearefacingexplosivegrowingdata.Asanimportantbridgebetweenhumankindandgreatamountofdata,informationvisualizationhasbeenrapidlybecominganinterdisciplinaryfieldwithgreatinfluence.Beingthemostwidelyuseddatastructure,thevisualizationofhierarchicalandnetworkdatahasalwaysbeenthefocusofvisualizationfields.Ininformationvisualization,hierarchicalandnetworkdataareusuallyabstractedastreeandgraph:node(vertex)isusedtorepresentinformation,andlinkbetweennodesareusedtorepresentrelationbetweenthecorrespondinginformation.Soitisoneofthefundamentalproblemstoresearchhowtovisualizationtreeandgraph.Thereisnogeneralmethodtosolvelarge-scaletreevisualizationproblem.Forlarge-scaletree,ausermayonlyconcerninafewnodes(e.g.,interestingnodes)andtheirsurroundingsatagiventime.Basedonthisobservation,thisthesispresentsaskeleton-basedstructure-preservingfocus+contextlayoutmethod:atopology-preservingalgorithmisfirstlyemployedtoextractskeletonbasedonthegiveninterestingnodes,whichisalsoatree,andthenalevel-preservinglayoutalgorithmisusedtodisplaytheskeleton.Inthisway,theusercannotonlyobserveinterestingnodesanditssurroundingnodes(e.g.,parent,sibling,andchildnodes),butalsounderstandrelationshipsamonginterestingnodes(i.e.,topologicalandlevelrelationships).Themethodhasbeenappliedtoaself-developedprobabilisticsafetyassessmentprogram,namedasRiskA,anditperformswellinaidingtheuserback-trackthespecifiednodesduringfaulttreeanalysis.Similarsub-graphhasgreatinfluenceinmanyareas,suchassimilarmolecularstructureanalysisinthefieldofbiochemistryandcommunityanalysisofsocialnetwork.Butasthemostwidelyusedlayoutalgorithm,Kamada-Kawailayoutalgorithmdoesn’tconsiderthesimilarityamongsub-graphs,sothattwosimilarsub-graphsmayhaveverydifferentappearance,whichmakesitdifficultfortheusertofindsimilarsub-graphs.Aimingatthisissue,asimilar-sub-graph-basedlayoutmethodisproposedinthisthesis:asub-graphmatchingalgorithmisfirstlyputf
