ABSTRACTWiththerapidandsustainedgrowthofeconomy,Chinaalsoexhibitsanincreasingdemandforenergyconsumption.However,duetothecoal-dominatedenergystructureofChina,theminingandutilizationprocessesassociatedwithcoalhavecausedseveredamagetotheecologicalenvironmentandhumanbeingsinthepastyears.Additionally,thecoaloflimitedreservescannotsatisfythesustainabledevelopmentofsocialandeconomy.Asaresult,aneffectivewayforsolvingthisproblemisexplorationandutilizationofcleanfuels,suchasthenaturalgasandoils.However,theeffectivenessoftheseconventionalfuelsisratherlimitedbecauseofthehighpriceaswellasthenarrowaccesstothem.Inaddition,thenationalsecurityproblemisoftenassociatedwithlargeimportationoftheseenergysources.Dimethylether(DME)iskindofcleanfueldevelopedintherecentyears,andithasbehaviorsofhighcombustionefficiency,highadiabatictemperature,andnearlynonepollutionemissionetc.Meanwhile,itcanbeproducedfromthecoalchemicalindustryandthemethanolsynthesisprocessinlargeamounts.Therefore,thecoal-derivedDMEisfairlyconductivetothecleanutilizationofcoal,anditisfeasiblerecently.ThedevelopmentandapplicationofDMEasafuelcanreleasethepollutionproblemaswellastheenergyshortagesignificantly.Byfar,DMEhasbeenextensivelyandsuccessfullyappliedinthechemicalindustryandauto-motives.However,itsapplicationsinothercombustionsystems,forexample,theindustrialboilers,werenotstudiedasthoroughly,whichreduceditscleanpotentialsconsiderably.TheobjectiveofthispaperistointroduceDMEintothefieldofindustrialboilersandtoinvestigateitscombustioncharacteristicsbymeansofexperiment,andfinally,todevelopappreciatetechnologiesforitsapplicationintheindustrialboilers.Inthepresentstudy,anmedium-scaledgascombustiontestplatformwasdesignedandconstructedforexperiments.TheDMEflamebehaviorsweretestedonit.Themainfindingsofthispaperareasfollows:Underthethermalloadof120kW,thegastemperatureswithintheradialranger=0-50mmslightlyreducedalongtheaxialdirectionuntilx=750mm,afterwhichthegastemperaturefellsharply.Atthefurnaceoutlet,temperaturewasnearly950℃.Inth
