AbstractDuetovariousfactorsthatimposedontranslationactivity,lossoftranslationisinevitableintranslationprocess.Translationlossesgowithtranslationwhenthetranslationactivitiesexist.However,thefactisthattranslationcompensationresearchdoesn’tgetitsdueattentionandmanyareasofitremaintobecarefullyprobedinto.Itisnotuntilthe1980sthattranslationcompensationisregardedseriously.ScholarsathomeandabroadsuchasXiaTingde,EugeneNida,GeorgeSteinerandotherselaborateontranslationcompensation.TheEnglishversionofADreamofRedMansionstranslatedbyYangXianyiandhiswifeGladysYangiswidelyandgreatlypraisedbynumerousscholarsbothathomeandabroad.Theauthorselectsthepoemsbasedontheknowntranslationcompensationtheory;andendeavorstoexplorestrategiesofcompensationadoptedbythetranslatoratlexical、discourseandaestheticlevels.Fivecompensationstrategiesamplification,specification,generalization,omissionandannotationareusedinlexicallevel.Compensationatdiscourselevelisrealizedbyaddinglogicalconjunctivesandpersondeixis.Inaestheticlevel,thisthesisismainlyanalyzedfromtherhymeofpoemsanditstranslationtext.KeyWords:translationcompensation;poems;ADreamofRedMansionsContentsChapter1IntroductionSignificanceofthePresentResearchADreamofRedMansions,writtenbyCaoXueqin,isagreatworkwithhighideologyandartistry,anditisalsooneofthemostfamousclassicsinChinainthemiddleofthe18thcentury.ItisanencyclopediathatrevealsdifferentaspectsofancientChinesefeudalsociety.Thereareaboutmorethan230variouspoemswhichcovers50%ofthewholenovel.Thedistinctivefeatureofthisworkliesinthesepoemsthataddsartisticcharmon,whichbecomesabigchallengetoitstranslation.Manytranslatorshavecomeunderthisnovel’sspellandembarkedontheirtranslationofit.TheEnglishversionADreamofRedMansionstranslatedbyYangXianyiandhiswifeGladyshasarousedtremendousattentionaroundtheworld.Moreandmoreresearcheshavebeenmadeabouttranslationcompensationstrategiesandgreatnumbersofbooks,articlesandthesesaboutthestudyofpoemsinADreamofRedMansionshavealsobeenpublished,butthisthesisisoneofthefirststudiesint
