ABSTRACTThispaperaimstostudyfrictionandwearpropertiesofepoxyresinsandKevlarfiberreinforcedepoxycompositesundersaltwaterlubricatinganddryslidingconditionsagainstTinBronzethrustring.Inordertofurtherunderstandwearmechanisms,wornsurfaceswereanalyzedbyscanningelectronmicroscopy(SEM)andX-rayphotoelectronspectroscopy(XPS).TED-85and615epoxyresinswerechosenasmatrixandmolybdenumdisulfide,graphiteandantimonysulfideplayrolesasfillersinthisepoxyresinsystem.AftersometestsofDTA,cureprocesswasconfirmedandmanyresincastingtestspecimensofsinglefillerbutdifferentproportionsweremade.Alotofworkwasdoneincludinganalyzingfrictionmechanism,evaluatingfrictionandwearperformanceinfluencecausedbyseawatercorrosion,measuringsamplesmoistureabsorptionrate,measuringchangesofBarcolHardnessvalueofsamples,measuringchangesofpolymerbodystructureandphasetransformationofsamplesurfaces,andsoon.AlltheworkmentionedabovehelpstochooseappropriateepoxyresinsystemofEP/KFcompositematerialsandunderstandwearmechanismsofEP/KFcompositesunderbothsaltwaterlubricatinganddryslidingconditionsagainstTinBronzethrustring.Fillersofmolybdenumdisulfideandantimonysulfidedidn’tplayrolesinthedryslidingcondition.Lubricationeffectdidnotexist.Anotherfiller-graphitecoulddramaticallyreducetheresincastingsamples’frictioncoefficientundersaltwaterlubricatingcondition,butfluctuationoffrictioncoefficientwaslarge.Addingtoomuchthreekindsoffillerswouldinfluencewholeresinsystems’curingeffectanduniformity.Aftersoakinginseawater,BarcolHardnessvaluesofresincastingspecimenslessen.Ir-spectraandXRDshowedthattherewerenochanges,aftersoakinginseawater,onchemicalcomposition,whetherinsidesofsamplesorsurfacesofsamples.Thistestingresinsystempresentedagoodcorrosionresistanttosaltwater.Butfrictioncoefficientpresentedabigfluctuationphenomenon.XPSandSEMshowedthatunderdryslidingcondition,samplefrictionsurfacesalreadyembeddedbygrindedmetalatom,andtheirdamagewasmoreseriousthanthatundersaltwaterlubricatingcondition.ThreestrandsoftwistingKevlarfiberpromotedmechanicalst
