Social Venture Partners: A Window to Social Entrepreneurship A Report on the Proceedings On May 16th, 2002, representatives from the corporate, government, and non-profit sectors engaged in a breakfast discussion intended to enhance participants’ understanding of social entrepreneurship and, specifically, Social Venture Partners Calgary. Hosted by the Canadian Centre for Social Entrepreneurship (www.bus.ualberta.ca/ccse/), Tides Canada (), and the Strategic Giving Group division of the United Way of Calgary and Area (), three panelists were asked to respond to the following three questions: Why is social entrepreneurship an important aspect of your work? What makes your work entrepreneurial? What are the key lessons from your social entrepreneurship experience? Opening remarks by Tim Draimin (Tides Canada) and Gary McPherson (Canadian Centre for Social Entrepreneurship) set the context for the discussion, followed by the responses of the panelists. The panelists (Ruth Capindale – Social Venture Partners Calgary, Pat Ferguson – Operation Eyesight, and Walter Hossli – MCC Employment Development) each brought unique yet, in many ways common, views of social entrepreneurship to the discussion. The Context Social entrepreneurship is a term used to describe the application of the principles of for-profit entrepreneurship to the non-profit sector. Although not new, social entrepreneurship has recently gained increased attention. Non-profit organizations have recently faced challenging funding shortfalls due primarily to reduced funding from governments. While corporate community investment and individual philanthropic giving tend to be on the rise, there is still a large net reduction of resources in the non-profit sector. The application of social innovation integrated with a business and entrepreneurial mindset is opening up a new path to short-term stability and long- sustainability for non-profit organizations, as they search for new means of becoming more fin
