However, despite the aggregate economic achievements of such an industry as tourism, which is dependent on many related factors and exerts heavy impacts on its resource base, more cautious study is needed to evaluate both tourism and tourist resources. Full Text: Copyright MCB UP Limited (MCB) 1998 Jie Wen: Department of Economics, University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia Introduction China has become one of the worlds most important tourist destinations as a result of the rapid growth in its tourism since 1978. It received 43.7 million inbound tourists in 1994 and earned an income of US$7.3 billion, reaching 2.08 per cent of the worlds total tourism receipts. The direct output from Chinas tourism industry accounted for 3.78 per cent of Chinas total GNP in 1994 and 6.1 per cent of its total export income. In addition, total domestic trips reached half a billion with expenditure of Yuan 102.4 billion in 1994 (National Tourism Administration of China, 1995).
