engineering,financialeconomicsandsurgerypapers;TengTan(2004)analyzetenseandvoiceofabstractsinscientificandtechnicalpapers;WangandSong(2002)formulatethegeneralapplicationoftense,voiceandpersonofabstractsinmedicalpapers.Sofar,nonestudyhasshedlightononespecificlinguisticfeatureacrossdisciplinesbasedonarelativelylargecorpus.Swales’(1990)seminalstudyofthestructureofacademicdiscoursespecifiesthattheusesofgrammarfeatures,suchastenses,aspectsandthepassivevoice,arehighlyconventionalized.Whiletheperfectaspect,forexample,canbefoundinintroductoryorliteraturereviewsectionsofacademicpapers,theprogressiveaspectishardlyeverfoundinwrittenacademicgenre.Thus,CLEshavetoadapttosomecommonlyacceptedprinciplesinacademiccommunications.Althoughtheprinciplesarenotnecessarilyfixedandminorchangescanbemadewithinacertainrangegiventhatnomajorprinciplesshouldbeviolated,abetterknowledgeoftheabstractsinEnglishpatternswillsurelyhelptheresearchersbothinwritingRAandRAabstracts.However,ininstructionaltextsdealingwithacademicwriting,themeanings,functionsandusesofvariousEnglishtensesandaspectsarenotaddressedwithanydegreeofdetail.Noraretheseimportantfeaturesofacademicproseusuallyorprominentlyconnectedtotheproductionofacademicwritingandthecontextsappropriateforthem(Hinkle,2004a).AstudybyVann,MeyerandLorenz(1984)reportedthatUSuniversitylecturersaskedtoassesstheacceptabilityofEnglishwrittenbyNNSstudentsofsciencesorsocialsciencesputtenseerrorsintothe‘‘leastacceptable’’categoryoferrors.Besides,tenseandaspectchoicedoesposesomechallengestointermediatelearners,evenadvancedscholars.DetailedcontrastivestudyofEnglishRAabstractbynativespeakersofEnglish(NSEs)andChineselearnersofEnglish(CLEs)stillremainsunexplored,especiallyintermsoftenseandaspect,.Inparticular,whetherornottenseandaspectchoicehassomethingtodowithotherlinguisticcategories,suchasreportingverbs,subjects-predicatecollocations,isseldomcoveredinpreviouscontrastivestudies.Researchpapersinjournalsoftenattachimportancetotimelinessandstatewhichaccuratelytellsthete
