AbstractStudies on community spatial environment has began early after World War Two. However, studies at home and abroad mainly concentrates on the following aspects: function, scale, admeasurement, form, under surface and material of the space. On the other hand, when it refers to the satisfaction of communication needs and the enhancement of neighboring relationship, researches of community design at home and abroad not focuses on the positive effects which the shared space has on the enhancement of neighboring relationship and the formation of communication system but on the communication space.When it comes to the exploration of shared space, the single building only discusses the atrium space in the building, which is a traditional form of shared space. Only a few papers have mentioned the outdoor environment, not to mention to organize, analyze and summarize of the various types of shared space which have absent in modern architecture and environment design. In the research of public environment in community, scholars pay much attention to the studies of communication space, which more studies have been achieved in this field.This thesis mainly concentrates on the outer space of the community as well as routine acts of residents. By analyzing the concept, character, and meaning of the community shared space, the author tries to summarize various types and designing principles of the shared space, which is prevalent in the present communities, with the help of exploration of the current situation of shared space which exist in Xi’an, characterized by the typical outdoor and semi.outdoor. Suggestions of alteration and design would also be given in this thesis.
