Key Business Value Findings
Corporate Card programs still lag behind personal cards in payments for business ex-
penses, primarily due to the lack of information or knowledge about the benefits of card
programs. These benefits include greater employee convenience and, from the buyers’
perspective, greater visibility into spend, transaction cost saves, as well as an opportunity
to leverage supplier discounts and rebates. While companies in this AberdeenGroup re-
search study report that cumbersome manual processes are affecting employee productiv-
ity and are a top pressure prompting change in their procure-to-pay activities, the re-
sponse to date has been to pursue strategic sourcing strategies — not consolidation of
spends under card programs. Check usage is still the most commonly used method for
payment of business expense, followed by wire transfers. Usage of cards as payment
method is less than 50%.
In the past decade, corporate payment cards have emerged as a more efficient payment
vehicle alternative for the key spend categories. Many companies have saved time and
money in reporting and processing costs after moving some of their spend under the cor-
porate card. However, the optimum level of corporate cards adoption hasn’t been reached
at the market because of a series of problems and challenges that scare away potential
adopters. In this report, AberdeenGroup looks at the challenges and solutions, as
