* stepping down inhaled corticosteroids * This paper again suggests that the bone marrow can contribute to the hepatic oval (progenitor) cell population. Following Petersen’s original and influential Science paper suggesting that the bone marrow can supply oval cells {1}, there have been several groups that have disputed this - showing that the oval cells are of an intrahepatic source {2, 3}. This again opens up the possibility that the bone marrow can contribute to parenchymal regeneration of the liver, although the magnitude of the effects would appear to be relatively modest. These conflicting results should stimulate further work in this area with independent models and protocols. This is because it is vital for our fundamental understanding of liver regeneration to know whether extra-hepatic cells can supply liver stem cells. This will inform our understanding of the mechanisms of chronic liver disease and liver cancer formation. Our group have published in this area and suggested that the bone marrow contributes largely to the fibrotic and inflammatory cells in the liver and only rarely to the parenchymal cell population.
