A Comparative Analysis Between English and Chinese Humorous JokesAbstractHumor plays a very important role in our daily life, our socials harmony, and in the development of our nations culture. It is a state of mind, a point of view and a way of looking at life. Humor is also a universal form of art and a tool of communication. It not only helps to oil interpersonal relationships but also is good for psychological and physiological health. More often than not, humor is expressed by language. Humorous language is so universal that it exists in each nation. In a broad sense, it can reflect a countrys history, politics, economy, culture and so forth. In a narrow sense, it can reflect the feature of a society, peoples life style, way of behavior, and individual’s character, etc. So the studies of humor and humorous language are very essential. From ancient times to recent years, humor has been extensively and enormously studied. There have emerged lots of philosophers, psychologists, sociologists, anthropologists and so on, who have made significant contributions to humor research from the views of functions and techniques of humor and so on. However, there are few people who apply linguistic approaches to humor research. This thesis analyzes humorous language from the angle of linguistics. The ultimate aim is to comparatively analyze how and why humor can be created from linguistic perspective in both English and Chinese. Then the readers can proceed to the next steps of being good humor—creators and knowing the two languages better. It is mainly from four aspects of linguistics—phonological devices, lexical devices, syntax devices and figures of speech— to compare English humorous jokes and Chinese humorous jokes.
