The functions of the inverted index An inverted index is a mapping of words to their location in a set of documents and this is also the core of the search engine that allows for fast query processing. The inverted index is very helpful. It makes the searching process faster and easier. For example, it avoids having to search through all the documents when a user enters a query; Also, It contains data structures that allow the terms to point to documents that contain them, and this is just like the index at the back of a book, if you want to search a certain word in the dictionary, we can turn to the back of the dictionary, find the word by the alpha order in the index, and then turn to the exact page or location, therefore it is more efficient than look for the word by leaf through all the dictionary. So, the inverted index allows you to do a fast?full text search, at a cost of increased processing when a document is added to the database. But it’s worthwhile. Page 1 . The Ranking Function In?information retrieval, the ranking function?is a function used by?search engines?to rank matching documents according to their?relevance?to a given search query. The most relevant answer will be listed in the first place. For example, if you input a query to search a document, once the searching engine has identified a set of potentially relevant documents, then it will determine which documents are most relevant to your query, so that they may be listed in the top of the page, which is prone to catch your attention more easily. The?tf-idf?ranking function?is a simple function of the ranking function. Its improves retrieval performance over other IR ,for instance, the Boolean IR .It also allows retrieval of documents that approximately match a query, and it is easy to sort documents according to their degree of similarity.
