英国国防大臣法伦在2014年英国保守党秋季年会英语演讲稿 　　To address this Conference is always an honour; to do so as Defence Secretary is a privilege. 　　I want to end my speech by quoting from mr. nixon. “our destiny offers, not the cup of despair, but the chalice of opportunity.” the future is not ours to see of course. however, by seizing firmly the opportunities, by knowing clearly about ourselves, we, human beings, can doubtlessly achieve the real harmony with nature! 　　The first duty of government is to keep Britain safe. 　　As a Party we can be proud that not only have we tackled the largest peacetime deficit but wehave also sorted the defence budget. 　　That’s because we have a Prime Minister who puts defence at the top of his priorities. And aChancellor who understands that strong defence depends on a strong economy. 　　Four years on we have the biggest defence budget in Europe and the second largest in NATO. 　　Thanks to my predecessors Liam Fox and Philip Hammond, Defence is now on a secure footingso we can invest again in the Royal Navy, the Army, and the Royal Air Force. 　　We have the best and the bravest Armed Forces, working 24/7 across the world to protect us ndash;often out of sight, never out of mind, 　　In my first week I sent HMS Enterprise to Tripoli to rescue British citizens from war-torn Libya. I take with me the memory of a more successful graduate student effort, the establishment of the Association of Graduate Engineering Students, known as AGES. Started by a handful of engineering graduate students because we needed a way to elect representatives to a campus-wide graduate student government, AGES soon grew into an organization that now sponsors a wide variety of activities and has been instrumental in addressing a number of engineering graduate student concerns. 　　…in Cyprus I met airmen and women providing humanitarian support to people in Iraq 　　…and here at home defending our skies; helping with the floods; and supporting the inspiringInvictus Games. 　　我就是喜欢这样说S
