The Required Scholarly Project Dr. Joyce M. Richey, PhD 601 Mudd Research Bldg 323-442-1939 jrichey@usc.edu Analytical thinking skills are crucial to the practice of medicine “Every physician is a scientist. A patient presents with signs and symptoms, a hypothesis is generated as to the possible cause, diagnostic measurements are purely reflective of the methods employed to test your hypothesis. Based on the results, you conclude the best form of treatment.” Starting the RSP You have the option of engaging in summer research summer between MS1 and MS2. It is inherent that for completion of certain scholarly projects, summer research will be a requirement. You and your faculty mentor will design a detailed research plan, including timelines for successful execution and completion of the RSP What makes a good project? First and foremost, it should be interesting Research question should be exciting (create passion) You should learn something of value to you A technique, methodology, a way of approaching problems, something you can take with you It should be productive There should be a reasonable chance of answering your question and publishing it Create a permanent record of what you have done Mechanisms to find a mentor Web access with detailed links, providing names and research interests of potential mentors, also funding sources RSP research fair, allowing students to meet with faculty mentors to discuss their research interests Annual Poster Days (Mon. April 30th and Wed. May 2nd) held in the spring will serve as a conduit for MS1 students to review MS2 scholarly projects and future research opportunities. What you should start doing now? Thinking about what type of project ignites tremendous interest Talking to Year 2 students already engaged in research with similar interests Talking to potential research mentors Exploring funding sources if planning to do summer research Steering Committee Dr. Joyce M.
