RESEARCH AND INNOVATION at the State University of New York Introduction The State University of New York system is the largest public system of higher education in the country; it is also the youngest. SUNY’s strength is in its 64- campus range and diversity – comprised of research universities, comprehensive colleges, medical schools, community colleges, and technical colleges. Most importantly, SUNY provides an accessible, affordable, quality college education. SUNY is at a critical juncture in its maturation and we welcome the leadership of the Commission on Higher Education in surveying, analyzing, and developing a comprehensive plan for SUNY’s future. In this document, we outline specific recommendations for propelling SUNY to a leadership role in the knowledge economy of New York State and nationally. We believe that taking such leadership is critical to grow the kind of public university system that New York can be proud and for which it has desperate economic and cultural needs, especially in several severely economically depressed regions. We further believe that SUNY can be the engine of innovation, industry and economic revival and vitality well into the future if the State allocates its resources in support of SUNY wisely and strategically. Every $1M of research funding to a university creates 29 new jobs and enriches the economy by $2M, with significant additional revenue and economic dynamism created by accrual of taxes and secondary effects. With this as our touchstone, we make the following recommendations: RESEARCH FACULTY: Recruit excellent research faculty and develop infrastructure to support them in sufficient numbers across the university to drive sustained innovation, propel excellence in graduate and undergraduate education, and significantly increase extramural research funding.
