THEEUROPEANCOMMISSION,
HavingregardtotheTreatyontheFunctioningoftheEuropeanUnion,
HavingregardtoRegulation(EC)No1333/xxoftheEuropeanParliamentandoftheCouncilof16Decemberxxonfoodadditives(1),andinparticularArticle10(3)thereof,
Whereas:

AnnexIItoRegulation(EC)No1333/xxlaysdownaUnionlistoffoodadditivesapprovedforuseinfoodandtheirconditionsofuse.
(2)
ThatlistmaybeupdatedinaccordancewiththecommonprocedurereferredtoinArticle3(1)ofRegulation(EC)No1331/xxoftheEuropeanParliamentandoftheCouncil(2)eitherontheinitiativeoftheCommissionorfollowinganapplication.

On25March2016anapplicationwassubmittedforauthorisationoftheuseofsteviolglycosides(E960)asasweetenerincertainenergy-reducedorwithnoaddedsugarsbeveragesfallingunderthefoodsubcategory‘Other’ofAnnexIItoRegulation(EC)No1333/xx.TheapplicationwassubsequentlymadeavailabletotheMemberStatespursuanttoArticle4ofRegulation(EC)No1331/xx.

Steviolglycosidesarenon-caloricsweet-tastingconstituentsandmaybeusedtoreplacecaloricsugarsincertainbeverages,thusreducingthecaloriccontentofthoseproducts.Consequently,steviolglycosidesprovidesweetnesstothosebeverageswithoutdeliveringadditionalcaloriestothefinalproduct,offeringconsumersenergy-reducedorwithnoaddedsugarsproducts,inaccordancewithArticle7ofRegulation(EC)No1333/xx.

PursuanttoArticle3(2)ofRegulation(EC)No1331/xx,theCommissionistoseektheopinionoftheEuropeanFoodSafetyAuthority(‘theAuthority’)inordertoupdatetheUnionlistoffoodadditivessetoutinAnnexIItoRegulation(EC)No1333/xx.
