ContextPoverty continues to pose formidable challenges globally today. In an era where rapid changes are reshaping the economic and social contours, considerable sections of humanity finds itself in the margins of progress and well being. As a global federation committed to end poverty and injustice, ActionAid (AA) is constantly in pursuit of reviewing and recasting its approach, strategies and programs to deepen its’ impact in a fast changing world. The battle against poverty is happening along many fronts, determined by ideologies, beliefs and capacities. AA’s work over the last four decades has been informed and influenced by the centrality of Human Rights as a non-negotiable and inalienable facet in development interventions and its activities have always been positioned in line with this moral and programmatic imperative. Recognizing the fluidity and rapidity of changes in the contemporary world, AA recently embarked on a participatory process to recast its strategy for 2012-2017. The resultant strategy – People’s Action to End Poverty – seeks to consolidate the gains from the previous strategy with an emphasis on innovations and makes a clear emphasis on the primacy of addressing the challenges of poverty through building a rights based inclusive people centered approach that recognizes the need to negotiate power and politics.
