How are these two paragraphs different? * * Think of topic sentences as the first piece of the puzzle that you are putting together. Topic sentence is usually the first sentence in the paragraph. In addition the topic sentence expresses the same idea that your title of your paragraph expresses and it serves to introduce the main idea that will be discussed in the paragraph. Some topic sentences also introduce the main points or details that will be covered in the middle of the paragraph. The main idea is the general idea that is to be covered in the paragraph. The details are the particular facts or ideas to be covered. The main idea is like a car. Details are like the various aspects of a car that make that car different from other cars. What are some details about a car that would make it different? What is the function of a topic sentence? The topic sentence is for a paragraph what a coming attraction is for a movie. The topic sentence has to grab the reader’s attention so that he or she wants to read more. It has to tell the reader some information so that he knows basically what it’s about, but it can’t reveal everything about the paragraph, or the reader will have no reason to read on. * * There are three types of topic sentences. * General topic sentence only covers the main idea of the paragraph. The general topic sentence DOES NOT cover the main points or details to be discussed. Sometimes this type of topic sentence is the most interesting because it can be used to quickly grab the reader’s attention, and it leaves a lot to the reader’s im
