凝聚在时光中歌舞升平 　　“A great lady never admits her age”is a statement that simply doesn’t apply. Possibly the greatest lady of the entertainment world in Honolulu is freely admitting her age and inviting everyone to celebrate with her. The Hawaii Theatre is 90, and going stronger than ever. 　　The Hawaii Theatre was built in 1922 in the heart of Honolulu’s Chinatown by Consolidated Amusements of Honolulu. Old-timers talk about watching their first movie and even getting their first kiss in the back of the balcony. As television became the delivery source for entertainment, the Hawaii Theatre slowly lost the audience. In 1984 the theater closed the doors. The word went out that it would be torn down. Just like a scene from the movies, Hawaii’s citizens united, raised funds and saved the theater. While restoration plans were being formulated, concerts on the historic Robert Morton grand theater organ delighted audiences. 　　Performances continued until 1989 when the doors were boarded up. The good news was, full restoration was on the drawing board. Enter stage left, Malcom Holzman of Hardy, Holzman, Pfeiffer Associates of New York. These experts on restoration worked with the Hawaii Theatre Center organization and many volunteers to complete the total restoration and re-open the theater in April, 1996. 　　The restoration of the marquee was completed in November 2004. In 2005 the theater was recognized as the “Outstanding Historic Theatre in America”. Layer upon layer of gold leaf was applied to the pillars, mosaics restored, velvet covered seats added, all for the great lady of downtown Honolulu.
