The regime of Hu Jing-yi made the two coexist for several months. But the rule of Yue Wei-jun,Hu ’s successor, evoked public opposition. The Red Spears expanded rapidly especially when instigated by Wu Pei-fu,and caused the Second Army of Guominjun defeated in Henan. In 1927, the Northwest Army led by Feng Yu-xiang forced its way in Henan. At the beginning, they treated the Red Spears with caution, and the Red Spears for the Northwest Army’s amicable signals as well as the fame of Feng Yu -xiang entrusted the new comer with their hope. All these made them cooperative seemingly but each using the other for his own ends actually . When the Northwest Army took control of Henan completely, they gave the Red Spears conciliation, reorganization or suppression. Finally the Northwest Army’s suppressing the Heavenly Gate Society marked the Red Spears’ falling. The relations between the Northwest Army (Guominjun) and the Red Spears is one of main presentations of the social conflicts in rural China of that period.
