Child Protection PolicyOur beliefs:Discovery believes in treating all children as individuals, and ensuring that children are empowered to know their rights and to acknowledge their responsibilities as individuals. Through encouraging respect for each other and valuing difference, Discovery champions integration throughout its projects. Our projects actively provide an environment in which children are listened to and allowed to express their ideas and opinions both independently and within groups. Discovery believes in promoting healthy living by encouraging children to participate in physical activity whilst on projects, and encourages all Project Coordinators to bring fruit instead of crisps and or sweets to projects. Discovery educates children on global issues such as climate change, fair trade and sustainability through the involvement in campaigns and activities. The policy applies to all Discovery staff, associates and other adults involved in intergenerational projects (including Council and Advisory Group members) and others who come into contact with children when representing the organisation.Definitions: For the purposes of this policy, the definition of ‘children’ used in this document are those up to the age of 12. For the purposes of this policy the definition of ‘young person’ are those aged 12 to 17 inclusive. The term ‘associate’ refers to any Discovery staff and volunteers. Aims:Discovery aims to offer a broad range of volunteer led activities that each in turn enable children to grow and grasp opportunities to learn, as well as building confidence and relationships. Projects are educative, participative, empowering and expressive in accordance with the Youth Work Curriculum Statement for Wales. Practical steps:Safety on Projects:All associates are required to consent to a CRB check before they undergo their work with children/young persons to ensure their suitability (please see our CRB policy).
