Abstract Humor is an essential element of people‟s colorful life. A humorous language in a unique linguistic and cultural context has its own features. So it is easy for a native speaker to appreciate his or her native humor but it may be difficult for people with a different cultural background to understand or accept it. Thus, accurate translation of humorous language is of great importance to cross-culture communication. Markedness Theory is a very important guiding theory to the research of humorous language in English and Chinese as well as the mutual translation between them. That is the reason why Markedness Theory has been chosen as the guiding theory of my thesis. Tthere are some similarities between humorous language in English and Chinese. From the markedness angle, these similarities are many exposed from these three aspects: 1) similarity of the formation of English and Chinese humorous language; 2) similarity of the marked purpose of English and Chinese humorous language; 3) similarity of the markedness means of English and Chinese humorous language;. And then, the similarities mentioned above set a solid basis for the further research of mutual translation between humorous language in English and Chinese. As to the translation of English and Chinese humorous language, many scholars have done research work from different angles, but most of their researches were conducted in traditional methods under the guidance of the traditional translational theories, which were lack of theoretical support to understanding humorous language as a strange marked linguistic behavior. That is a virgin land left for this thesis to explore. Nida‟s Functional Equivalence Principle seems to be a relatively good translational guideline, but it is still not ideal sometimes. So this thesis turns to the Markedness Equivalence Principle, which was put forward by a modern Chinese scholar Hou Guojin.
