Mintel GNPD Category Insight Juice Juice Drinks Q1 Q2 2010 Executive Summary Performance Overall, new product launches decreased by 12% in this review period but increased by 4% year-on-year. Juice remained the most-active sub-category, accounting for 37% of launches followed by Fruit/Flavoured Still Drinks with 34% and Nectars with 29%. Natural goodness In the six months under review in fact, the no additives/ preservatives claim led the way featuring in 37% of products. Other natural claims were more limited with just 10% of products marketed as all natural, and 6% organic. Concerns about sugar calories Low/no/reduced sugar products maintained a 22% share of launches, while low/no/reduced calorie lines accounted for just 5% of the market. Healthy drinks for children Products overtly aimed at children have remained somewhat steady in each six month period throughout the two years to June 2010, accounting for some 6% of launches. Executive Summary More potential in functional claims In the period under review, some 6% of launches carried a functional claim. This limited activity is arguably linked to the inherently health image of segments such as Juice (which have the highest fruit/vegetable content) and therefore limited need to further enhance products with extra functional ingredients. Flavours Orange and apple remain the most popular flavours, followed by mango and grape. Unusual flavours this review period included cashew fruit and sea buckthorn. Competitive Context Issues affecting the market Competitive Context: Sub-category comparison Regional Analysis: Summary Asia Pacific Asia Pacific remained the leading region, now accounting for 37% of launches - a 2% increase period-on-period. Europe Europe dropped to second place, after seeing a 4% decrease in activity, now accounting for 36% of total launches.
