IIIIABSTRACTMarine anaerobic ammonium-oxidizing bacteria (MAB) play an important role in the marine nitrogen cycle in nature. Unfortunately, the widespread occurrence but low diversity of MAB was another great obstacle along with slow growth rates and sharp environmental sensitivity for the implementation of marine anammox process. In order to promote technological innovation for process control, and to determine high-rate nitrogen removal, start-up, operational performance, restart-up and kinetics were studied in present investigation. The major conclutions are as follows:2The fast start-up of marine anammox bioreactor (MABR) was achieved with marine anammox sludge as inoculums and non-woven fabric as biomass carrier. Consequently, Osaka 1 quick stepped into activity elevation phase with a slight interval on lag phase compared with2Osaka 2. The effluent concentrations of NH4－＋-N and NO－-N both decreased to 5 mg/L withNO3-N production of 5.7 mg/L on day 16. After initial culture of 90 days, we obtained23nitrogen loading rate (NLR) of 0.37 kg N/m3/d and nitrogen removal rate (NRR) of 0.30 kg N/m3/d, and the nitrogen removal efficiencies (NREs) were over 80.0% throughout the culture.23Additionally, the stoichiometric ratio of NH4＋-N:NO－-N:NO－-N was 1.0:1.27:0.18, whichwas close to the theory ratio of 1.0:1.32:0.26. During the whole experiment, high nitrogen removal efficiencies and steady nitrogen removal performances were achieved.The nitrogen removal and its potential of MABR were studied. The NLR was heightened by increasing the substrate concentrations or shorting HRT, and modified Stover- Kincannon model was applied to study the nitrogen removal potential. During the whole experiment, the NLR was increased from 0.47 kg N/m3/d to 4.81 kg N/m3/d, and a high NRR of 2.15 kg N/m3/d was achieved.
