II II ABSTRACT Peter Carey is a famous contemporary writer of Australia. He created a lot of postcolonial literature works. Oscar and Lucinda is the most famous postcolonial writing text of all his novels which is not only conveyed strong post-colonial historical view but also included valuable significance in the post-colonial writing environment. This paper selects Peter Carey′s novel “Oscar and Lucinda” which won the Booker Prize in 1988, analyses the post-colonial writing tendency. Firstly it expounds the presentation of post-colonial writing “Oscar and Lucinda”. Because of the hybridity feature of the post-colonial writing, the first part expresses from three aspectsthe identity of the characters, the plot layout of the novel and the hybridity of narrative language. The mixed identities of Oscar, Jeffries and Lucinda made them in a certain condition of contradiction which structured by themselves, so their final result must be tragical. The plot which spliced together like a kaleidoscope show a real word colonized by empires, and the hybridity of narrative language explained the purpose that the colonized people would subvert empires′mainstreamed discourses. Secondly, the paper analyses the causes of the post-colonial writing which contained Peter Carey′s unusual experience, complex special social and historical background and the strongly influence of Australia literary tradition . Finally, the paper inquires into the valuable significance of ideas and art. This novel is not only criticizes thought of patriarchal society and exposes historical lies of empires, but also for reality, expects the intergration of diversified culture. He pointed out that only giving recognition of their own national history and culture would build independent identity of it, then usher in a harmonious society of Australia consist of different culture ,and even the common development of global culture.
