PAGE PAGE iii Abstract Nowadays, many new media like film, TV, internet and so on have been well-developed, thus, literary reading is not so attractive any more. Bill Kates even predicted that paper media would disappear in the future. However, an English writer J.K.Rowling has made a miracle. Her novel series Harry Potter has been widely spread throughout the world since it was first published. Harry Potter has been a poster to teenagers across the globe. The novel series has been republished time and time again since it came to China in 2000. And the film based on it won a success at the box office as well. Why did it win so much popularity in China? What can we learn from it for our Chinese chidren literature? First of all, Harry Potter is an excellent novel series, in which Rowling has created a magic world for the readers. This imaginary world is not so far away from the readers for the life in it is familiar to us. Besides, its success also based on the vivid descriptions of the characters , the complex plot and the distinct theme. However, we shouldn’t isolate a literary work from its readers. Only considering the writer and the work itself, we can not find its real value. As we know, every piece of work exists in different times and spaces, and readers in different contexts would inevitably be influenced by their own historical and cultural background, so from the view of comparative literature, readers of different races are in different cultural background, and as a result they have distinct aesthetic “reception screen”—— the orientation of value decided by their cultural background, psychological structure and the concrete qualities of their own. Then, the differences between Eastern and Western cultural traditions must lead to the differences between the reception in China and in Britain, through which we can observe the characteristics of the day in China and the development of the psychological structure of the Chinese readers.
