Course Description:
The purpose of this course is to equip students to have the ability to read, design, collect and analyze qualitative data, and evaluate qualitative research projects. In addition to introduce components of qualitative research, commonly used research approaches in nursing and methods of data analysis will be discussed. Students will practice skills of observation and data transcription.
本課程旨在培養學生具備閱讀質性研究文獻、設計質性研究計畫、收集與分析質性資料、及評值質性研究文獻。課程除介紹質性研究內容外，並討論常運用於護理的理論與研究法及資料分析法。學生亦會練習觀察與資料轉譯技巧。
Course Objectives：In this course, students will:
Specify differences between qualitative and quantitative research.
Identify and describe characteristics and components of qualitative research.
List research questions for qualitative research.
Describe commonly used research approaches in nursing and their underpinning philosophy.
Practice qualitative data analysis of collected data.
Understand validity, trustworthiness, and rigour of qualitative research.
Evaluate qualitative research.
Teaching/Learning Strategies:
Lecture, pre-class reading, seminar, interview and coding practice, and observation exercise
Course Evaluation:
1. Class Participation and in-class discussion: 40％
2. Research questions, interview guide, interview, and analysis: 40%
Decide a topic of interests and list research questions and interview guide. Interview one person based on interview guide for about 10 minutes. Transcribe the interview into words.
3. Fieldwork and presentation: 10%
Find a place and take field notes to record an observation for about 10 minutes. Describe the setting and people including activities
