Abstract Hector Berlioz（1803-1869）is a French famous composer, conductor and theorists in western music with great reputation during the Romantic period in the 19 century. He is expert in program music and the melody in his music is lyric and elegant, rich and colorful music language as well as gorgeous orchestration with rich originality. He combined symphony with other art based on the traditional Beethoven symphonies and emphasized to express personal feelings and made his works full of romantic things. Therefore, Berlioz is called the French romantic music pioneer. Berliozs vocal music is too few to mention, but still his romantic feelings and extraordinary artistry could be reflected in these few works. His vocal music works highlights of his sensitive inner heart, fragile nerve and profound emotional experience and love is the eternal theme in his works, meanwhile, he formed his own unique style in respect of the aesthetic characteristics and creating techniques. This thesis adopted Berlioz’s vocal divertimento named “summer night” as the research subject. Through in-depth analysis of background, music language and artistic style, we finally interpreted the true value of this works and made an accurate positioning. The paper is made up of introduction, main body and epilogue. In foreword part, a simple general introduction is made about the significance of the paper and present research situation at home and abroad as well as research method and innovative part. The main body is divided into four parts: the first part is the comprehensive knowledge about Berlioz through his life story, the story of his which are rarely knew by people and his temperament. The second part is some brief introductions about creative lyrics and publication. In the third part the researcher made an in-depth analysis into the body of his vocal divertimento “summer night”; In the fourth part, artistic style about the vocal divertimento “summer night” was concluded through the research
