Abstract Riparian vegetation is the important part of riparian ecosystem, it plays a significant role in riparian functioning. Herbs, as the dominant life form of riparian vegetation, are more sensitive to disturbance, drought stress and landform heterogeneity. So characteristics of herbaceous communities can better reflect the environmental changes of riparian ecosystem that caused by natural and human disturbance. The paper studied herbaceous species diversity and herbaceous community quantitative features in the riparian zone of East and West Liaohe River with the sample line approach. To find the major environmental factors affecting the distribution pattern of riparian herbaceous communities, cluster analysis and ordination analysis were conducted by using group average clustering analysis and detrended correspondence analysis (DCA). Results are shown below: There were 118 herbaceous species, belonging to 36 families and 70 genera in riparian of East Liaohe River. And in West Liaohe River, there were 134 herbaceous species, belonging to 34 families and 79 genera. Composite, Gramineae, Polygonaceae and Cyperaceae were dominant families in both of the two rivers. For species composition, large families, larger families and more-species genera took a smaller proportion in the composition of vegetation. While single-species families, fewer-species families and single-species genera and fewer-species genera took a relatively larger proportion. The proportion of single-species families, fewer-species families in riparian of East Liaohe River are 55.56% and 33.33%, respectively; that of West Liaohe River are both 44.12%; the proportion of single-species genera in riparian of Eastand in West Liaohe River are 70.00% and 69.62%, respectively. The riparian plant communities had a temperate characteristic in terms of geographic composition, which was related to the geographic location and habitats.
