Abstract Urban Inner-public Space is a special architectural public space, which opens to the urban public and undertakes urban functions. The proposition of the concept of “Urban Inner-public Space” is an approach to lessen the contradiction between the city and architecture, and promote a good combination between them. The Urban Inner-public Space is an overlapped space. To be specific, although it is an architectural space, it can also undertake the some functions of urban public space. So it has dual characteristics of architectural space and urban space. Therefore, it functions roles of dual space. Aiming at the existing problem between the cities and architecture designs, on basis of research findings in areas of architecture, urban design and environmental psychology, this thesis is to do a research on duality of the Urban Inner-public Space, to summarize the basic principles in its designing and to discuss the design method of it, and finally to set up a theoretic frame for future urban design and architecture. By looks back to the historical progression of the Urban Inner-public Space, and summarizes the spatial attributes and behavior characteristics of the Urban Inner-public Space, it illustrates that the duality is the substantive characteristics of the Urban Inner-public Space and the mark between the Urban Inner-public Space and common urban public space. The architectural attributes of the Urban Inner-public Space include integrity, specialization and definite territoriality. The urban attributes of the Urban Inner-public Space include publicity, fuzziness and relative independence. The influencing factors of the duality include spatial factors and behavior factors. The composing characteristics of the duality include material factors and immaterial factors.
